John met his father, Freddie, for the first time in seventeen years. It only came about because the press was busy turning up tit-bits from The Beatles past. (They had already found out about John’s mother “abandoning him at birth.”) John said: “He went away to sea and I never saw him again until I made a lot of money. I opened the ‘Daily Express’ and there he was, washing dishes in a small hotel or something very near to where I was living [the Greyhound Hotel in Hampton Court]. I didn’t want to see him.
