‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was released in the UK. Eagle-eyed fans noticed a small credit on the back which read “Cover by MC Productions and The Apple.” Although fans had no way of knowing what ‘Apple’ was at this moment in time, they were soon to find out.

This was also the day that the coppers jailed John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins – founder of the ‘International Times’ – part of their crackdown on drugs. The ‘International Times’ was an underground newspaper that focused on London’s counter-culture, and it’s sudden denunciation by the coppers led to an uproar in the art scene.
