One week after their successful joint-promotion of Gene Vincent and Gerry and the Pacemakers, Larry Parnes got back in touch with Allan Williams to see if he could provide a backing band for Billy Fury – another of Parnes’ acts. An audition of local Liverpool bands was hastily arranged at the Wyvern Social Club in Seel Street, and once word got around that a big-time promotor was looking for talent practically every band in town trundled up, hoping to hit the jackpot.

Adrian Barber recalled the scene: “This was Larry Parnes, man, the big-time promoter! He was the epitome of the cliched British showbiz guy: the mohair coat, always smoking a cigar.
