Ken came down with a cold and didn’t feel like playing much, so he pottered around the club wiping the tables down instead. But when Mona Best (Pete Best’s mum) came to hand out the money, he still had the nerve to ask for his 75p appearance fee! So they had a furious row and kicked him out. “I could see he wasn’t well enough to play,” she said. “So I told him to go and sit upstairs with mother. But Ken said no, he’d rather stay down in the club and watch. So just John, Paul and George played, and when I gave them their 15s [75p] each there was a bit of murmuring. ‘Where’s the other 15s?’ they said. ‘I’ve given it to Ken,’ I told them.
