The Beatles flew to Hamburg for a two-month stint at The Star-Club (minus George, who flew out on the 12th). They had to go, because it was the only way that Brian could release them from the short-term contract that they’d signed with Berthold back in June 1961. The contract was due to expire on the 30th June anyway, but Brian was impatient to wait, because he wanted to free them up for their impending date with Parlophone.

You may be wondering why Berthold gave them up, if he already had them under contract. But the fact is that he was more than happy to let them go. The ‘My Bonnie’ single had sold relatively well in Germany (reaching number five) but that was more to do with the popularity of Tony Sheridan, rather than his backing-band.
