The start of their last ever tour. Their first press conference in Chicago was dogged by questions about John’s ‘Jesus’ comment, and he was forced to apologise, although he questioned what he was apologising for (and to his everlasting credit, he merely apologised for ‘saying’ it – but not for believing it). He later dismissed the protests as “a couple of middle-aged DJs and 12-year-old-kids burning a pile of LP covers.” But his confidence was by now so shot, that after this conference was over he locked himself in his room and broke down and wept.
