Recording session for the radio show ‘Late Night Extra’ This show was transmitted live (BBC Light Programme) and featured an interview with Paul McCartney.

Buckingham Palace announced that The Beatles were getting MBEs, and some old war-hero’s started sending back their medals in disgust. One old codger sent his back saying: “I’ve been placed on the same level as vulgar nincompoops!” And John commented: “I thought you had to drive tanks and win wars to win the MBE.” The MBEs were actually awarded for ‘services to their country’, and ranked a lowly 120th on the list of 126 titles that it was possible for the Queen to bestow.

The saddest thing about this whole episode was that they were partly given to recognise their services to British exports, and Brian Epstein was completely snubbed (he wasn’t even invited to the palace!). And without him, they wouldn’t have sold a fucking bean. (…Moral of the tale? Giving medals to gay Jews …
