John informed Klein that he was quitting the Beatles. Klein immediately told him to keep stum for the good of the business – he was in the middle of re-negotiating their Capitol contract. This piece of bombshell news must have shaken Klein to the core because his management contract lifted most of his money off the Beatles’ ‘future’ sales. He only started earning 20% after he improved their existing record deal – so if the band split-up before he put pen to paper at Capitol then his future earnings would be significantly reduced. Remember – John’s solo albums had only sold about two copies each, and George’s ‘All Things Must Pass’ album was still a year away.
