Brian had been busy writing to all the trade papers and record review columns, trying to solicit a mention for the Beatles. One of the very first one’s he tried was ‘Disker’ – the record review columnist for the ‘Liverpool Evening Echo’. Disker (whose real name was Tony Barrow) wrote back saying that he couldn’t help because the Beatles hadn’t made a record yet, but he did offer to mention them to his record-label boss – it turned out that Tony was the same guy who wrote the sleeve notes at Decca!

Decca’s A&R man, Dick Rowe, then sent his assistant down to Liverpool, who, duly impressed, arranged for a proper audition with Dick on New Years Day. Brian then fired off an impatient letter to EMI, warning them of Decca’s interest, but, unbeknown to Brian, Ron White had already …
