Brian announced that NEMS was merging with Robert Stigwood’s RSO, swelling his stable of acts to a mighty fine set. Stigwood’s crop included The Bee Gees, The Who, The Moody Blues, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Eric Clapton’s Cream. Brian’s early acquisition of every group in a million-mile radius of Liverpool meant that NEMS had grown into an unwieldy goliath. And he no longer had the energy of four years ago, so a merger with Stigwood was supposed to take the pressure off his head.

There were persistent rumours that Brian tried selling the ‘whole’ of NEMS to Stigwood, which would have meant him becoming the new Beatles’ manager, but he was talked out of it by the group.
