Ringo arrived in Sydney, saying “I’ve heard you’ve got a bridge or something here. No one ever tells me anything, they just knock on my door and drag me out of bed to look at rivers and things.” Half an hour later he was flying to Melbourne to re-join the tour. One rather over-enthusiastic copper decided to carry him through the crowds on his shoulders, but reckoned without the PR woman’s big feet, and promptly tipped him head-first into three-thousand screaming kids! When a bashed-up Ringo finally got inside the hotel he ordered a stiff drink and went for a lie-down. The other Beatles (who’d arrived separately from Adelaide) didn’t fare any better, and the police were sending wailing cop cars around the block to act as a diversion.
