John and George flew to Rishikesh to study Transcendental Meditation. (Paul and Ringo flew out a few days later.) They were met by Mal, and Cynthia remembered their arrival being very unheralded – which made a nice change from the usual rigmarole. They got into three battered old taxis and passed through villages filled with “incense, sewage, gorgeous kohl-eyed children, and hideously deformed beggars.” The retreat itself was 150 feet above the Ganges, and was surrounded on all sides by jungle-covered mountains. But they were a bit surprised by the luxurious surroundings, because it had a swimming pool, a helicopter pad, and was surrounded by a barbed wire fence!
