It was on this day that John’s mother Julia was killed by Eric Clague, when he was tried to put his big clumsy foot on the brake and slammed it on the accelerator by mistake. The tragedy came at the worst possible time for John, because he was just starting to get to know her again. “We were sitting waiting for her to come home,” he remembered. “And Twitchy [John Dykins] and me were wondering why she was so late. Then the copper came to tell us. It was just like it’s supposed to be, you know, the way it is in the films, asking me if I was her son and all that. Then he told us, and we both went white.
