Stuart travelled back to Hamburg to be with Astrid, and resumed his studies at the State College of Art. Paul recalled: “So then, it was like, ‘Uh-oh! We haven’t got a bass player now,’ so everyone turned round and looked at me. I was a bit lumbered with the bass playing, really. I was playing piano and didn’t even have a guitar at the time, so I couldn’t really say that I wanted to be a guitarist.” He couldn’t afford a new one though, so he transformed his little Rosetti into a bass by nicking a few piano strings. “All of these clubs would wonder what had gone wrong with their pianos.
