Two years after Eddie Cochran’s mega-selling hit ‘Summertime Blues’, a well-known promotor called Larry Parnes brought him over from the States for a series of sell-out gigs with Gene Vincent. Sensing the potential, a local Liverpool promoter called Allan Williams approached Parnes with an offer to host a rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza at the Liverpool Stadium on the 3rd May. His idea was to pad out the first half with local Liverpool bands and headline the second set with Eddie and Gene. But their plan hit the buffers on the 16th when Eddie smashed his car into a tree-trunk and died. Vincent, who was already crippled anyway, suffered further injuries.

Parnes, in the very best showbusiness spirit, decided that the show simply must go on and asked Williams for another band to fill out …
