The Beatles at the Arnham War MemorialAt the Arnham War Memorial – 16 Aug ’60

The group, now called The Beatles, set off to Hamburg with a motley crew of men and women. Along for the ride came Allan, his Chinese wife Beryl, his brother-in-law Barry Chang, Lord Woodbine and George Sterner (a representative of Bruno Koschmeider). They got the boat over to Germany and drove the rest of the way, stopping for a famous photo at the Arnhem war memorial. Pete Best described the trip in ‘The Pete Best Story’: “From the start our progress was anything but plain sailing,” he said. “We should have had visas or permits to work in Germany so we were kept hanging around Harwich for some five hours while Allan Williams wrangled with the port authorities.
