Performance at the Kaiserkeller in Hamburg, West Germany, as part of their Kaiserkeller residency.

A German local, Klaus Voormann, heard Rory’s dulcet tones drifting through the air-vent and came in to see what all the fuss was about. He’d had a row with his other half (Astrid) earlier in the afternoon and thought he’d pass a bit of time in the seedy district. So he bought a beer and a packet of crisps and sat at the front.

He looked a bit out of place because it was a rock ‘n’ roll club and he was an ‘existentialist’ (i.e. someone who is very posh, very clever, and has a very bad taste in clothes). “I couldn’t believe the look of the boys whom I sat next to,” he said. “And there wasn’t much conversation as they couldn’t speak German. But the sound when the Beatles eventually went on stage was amazing.”
