Performance at the Casbah Coffee Club in West Derby, Liverpool.

Their first gig back after Hamburg was at The Casbah Coffee Club, and Pete’s mum (who owned the place) billed them as ‘The Fabulous Beatles from Hamburg!’ Pete recalled: “So everyone was waiting to see who the fabulous Beatles were. Down the stairs came John, Paul, George, Stu (sic) and me. It was, ‘Hang on a minute, they’re not The Fabulous Beatles. they’re The Quarrymen who used to play here. And that’s Pete from The Blackjacks! What the fuck is going on!”

Because Stu had chosen to stay behind in Hamburg, the Beatles found themselves without a bass-player. So they quickly drafted in Chas Newby to replace him (Pete’s old Blackjacks band mate). But he only lasted four shows. But one of those shows is now considered to be a major turning point in the Beatles’ …
