The Beatles met Cassius Clay at his training camp, before his famous bout with Sonny Liston. (This was before he became better-known as Muhammad Ali.) They’d already met Sonny on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ the previous week. (After they finished singing Sonny turned to his manager and said: “Are those motherfuckers what all the people are screaming about? My dog plays better drums than that kid with the big nose.” When Ringo found out he went absolutely mental, saying: “You motherfucking this and that, I’ll give you big nose in a minute!” He then beat the crap out of him with his drumsticks – which was probably why he lost the fight against Ali. Ringo softened him up!)
