Performance at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool.

Life continued to drip drip along in much the same way as before… the band just doing piddly little gigs around Liverpool and entering a few skiffle competitions. George said the playing was great, but the pay was pretty lousy: “I don’t think we ever got paid once in the first year I was with them. The only times we got anywhere near real money was when we started entering into skiffle competitions. We’d get through the early rounds easy,” he said, “but you never got paid for entering, just winning, and the rounds seemed to go on forever.” Paul remembered that there was this woman who kept on beating them by playing the spoons.

The biggest show they ever entered was Carroll Levis’ Mr Star-Maker Talent Show up in Manchester, which promised the victor a spot on the telly show …
