Three nights later Klaus persuaded Astrid Kirchherr to pop along. That proved to be a severe misjudgement on his part because she straight away fell in love with Stu! “They looked so wild and yet so innocent,” she cooed. “Stuart caught my attention first. He was so absolutely cool. He was wearing his sunglasses, standing with his legs crossed, playing the bass and smoking a cigarette.” The next one she noticed was George: “He was a lovely little boy. And we never judged him in any way, the way that we used to work out how intelligent or clever Stu, John and Paul were. He didn’t develop as quickly as the others, but he wasn’t stupid. He made these lovely little jokes at his own expense, sending himself up for being so young. I remember giving them all Christmas presents one year …
