The eighth issue of ‘Mersey Beat’ came out with a long article by Bob Wooler listing 273 different rock ‘n’ groups in the Liverpool area alone. “The population of Liverpool in 1963 was around one and a half million,” he said. “And yet there were more than 400 groups. Most of these groups were merely makeweight music-makers, their longevity measured more by the clock than by the calendar. Here today, gone tomorrow, their fling was quickly flung. But there was, however, a much more determined bunch; they believed that they could soon come good, and that fame, acclaim, and fortune were around the corner.” He duly reeled off a list of the Top Ten bands in the city centre, and the Beatles came out number one!
