John tried signing onto the seaman’s register with Nigel Whalley down at the docks, but as soon as Aunt Mimi found out she went totally doolally and sent them home at once. “I was rung up by this place at Pier Head,” she said, “some sort of seaman’s employment office… ‘We’ve got a young boy named John Lennon here,’ they said. ‘He’s asking to sign up.’ ‘Don’t even dream of it,’ I told them.” Then she put on her coat and hat and stormed straight down there to show them who’s boss.
