The second issue of ‘Mersey Beat’ came out, containing a report on the Beatles’ Tony Sheridan session. Bill Harry even offered John his own column, called ‘Beatcomber’ (nicked from the ‘Daily Express’ column ‘Beachcomber’). “He turned up at the office with an untidy bundle of papers and I leafed through them,” he said, “completely enchanted by the strange stories, drawings, short tales, and political satires.” He then persuaded Brian Epstein to purchase twelve dozen copies for his record shop, NEMS (North End Music Stores). “He said he’d take a dozen, and by that afternoon he’d sold them all out. He was quite amazed that they sold out so quickly, so he kept ordering more and they kept selling out. So with the next issue he ordered 144 copies – which was amazing for one small …
