John married Cynthia Powell at Mount Pleasant Registry Office. He was twenty-one and she was twenty-two. It wasn’t exactly the most romantic day of their lives because the whole thing was drowned-out by near-by road-works! Cyn remembered: “Outside the backyard was a cloth-capped workman grasping, in his dirty callused hands, a pneumatic drill. And, right on cue, the moment the ceremony started, he began drilling. None of us heard a word of the service. We couldn’t even hear ourselves think.” John said: “I couldn’t hear a word the bloke was saying.” And as if that wasn’t bad enough, John’s Aunt Mimi refused to attend because she hated Cynthia’s guts (“Two women loving the same man… an impossible situation,” explained Cynthia), and Cyn’s mum decided to sail back to Canada the night …
