Paul was forced to deny that he was dead. No one believed him. His statement to the press read: “I am alive and well and concerned about the rumours of my death. But, if I were dead, I would be the last to know.” The ‘New York Newsday’ reported: “The US news media have been flooded with calls and letters about rumours that Paul McCartney has been dead for years. ‘They are all ridiculous,’ Apple said. ‘It’s a lot of nonsense,’ said fellow Beatle John Lennon. ‘The rumours are too stupid to bother denying,’ said George Harrison. But Beatles drummer Ringo Starr could not be reached for comment.” [Fuelling rumours that he was also dead.]

By this time other bands were already starting to cash-in with tribute records: Terry Knight released ‘Saint Paul’ and Zacharias and the Tree People …
