The New Zealand police were a little up-themselves, and went around saying “We don’t want them, and we don’t know why you brought them. We only provide escorts for royalty and other important visitors.” They refused to put the police out, and two hundred fans managed to cram into the hotel garage as they were driving in. Mal and Neil had to kick them out one-by-one before they could open the doors. John complained: “It was a bit rough. I thought definitely a big clump of my hair had gone. And I don’t just mean a bit, either. They put three policemen on for three or four thousand kids.” One newspaper reported: “A chubby teenager with her hair in rollers successfully eluded three policemen to rub her handkerchief on the inside of the car on which The Beatles had ridden.
