The first showing of ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ on British TV. It attracted 20 million viewers, but was immediately rubbished by the critics. James Greed, of the ‘Evening News’, wrote: “Take your pick from the words, ‘Rubbish, piffle, chaotic, flop, tasteless, nonsense, empty and appalling!’ I watched it, and there was precious little magic, and the only mystery was to how the BBC ever came to buy it.” Another reviewer moaned: “It was terrible! It was worse than terrible. I watched it in a room together with twenty-five other people, and we were all stunned!” Another one said: “The Beatles have made the biggest mistake of their careers.
