The Beatles descended on Buckingham Palace to collect their MBEs. The Mall was packed from end to end and excitable shouts of “God save The Beatles!” went up all morning – the Queen must have thought it was Bastille Day all over again. John famously let it slip that they smoked some pot in the loos (with Prince Phillip). But whether that is true or not, we shall probably never know.

A journalist asked them how it was all choreographed, and Paul recalled: “A man shouted out George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. And the word ‘Starr’ was the cue for us to walk forward, left foot forward. It was just like a show.” George said: “The guards were drilling us.
