Performance at the Star-Club in Hamburg, West Germany, as part of their Star-Club residency.

For the last three nights of their two-week stint the Beatles were elevated to the top of the bill because Johnny and the Hurricanes took some time off. They shared the stage with Kingsize Taylor and Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, who happened to bag a tape of his own band. As a result, we’ve managed to get three (or maybe four) Beatles’ gigs preserved for posterity.

The story behind the tapes is quite long and complicated, but it breaks down like this: In the autumn of 1962 Adrian Barber was hired as stage-manager, and was given the jobs of installing a permanent recording facility and improving the club’s PA system.
