In what was turning out to be a very bad month indeed, the American ‘Datebook’ magazine published John’s ‘Jesus’ comment, under the headline: “I don’t know which will go first – rock n’ roll or Christianity!” There was an immediate uproar! Twenty-two radio stations immediately banned their records (and a week later it was up to thirty!), and some pious arseholes organized a Nazi-like book burning, where kids could chuck in their records and memorabilia. Brian even considered calling off the forthcoming tour in case they got shot! He had to fly over on the 6th to try and calm things down.

This was also the day that The Beatles turned down the chance to tour South Africa, on the grounds that the apartheid Government would segregate the blacks, and Bob Dylan had his famous …
