They arrived in Tokyo for the Japanese leg of the tour. The Japanese police were worried that the fans would cause a (friendly) riot, so they imprisoned them in Room 1005 of the Tokyo Hilton Hotel. They even had armed police roaming the corridors and stair-wells in case the thirty million kids tried storming the building. Every time one of the Beatles tried to get out to do some shopping they were dragged back in again, and when John tried escaping one morning, the police were so upset that they threatened to go on strike!

To relieve the boredom, the promoter started sending up market-men and sellers, to blag their wares and women. (He even offered them the use of a few geishas: “The best-looking crumpet in kimonos you can imagine.”) And he gave them tubes of paint and …
