The Beatles travelled down to London for the Decca audition. “I hired a bigger van especially,” said Neil. “I’d never been anywhere near London before, and it took ten hours and we got lost in the snow somewhere near Wolverhampton.” “It was bitterly cold and it was snowing,” said Pete, “and the revellers were already about in London’s West End by the time we booked into the Royal Hotel near Russell Square. In the square we joined in the singing of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, kissed a few willing lips but we didn’t exactly let ourselves rip. The implications of our audition were uppermost in our mind.”
