Paul responded to the hiring of Klein by hiring Eastman & Eastman as general council. (So Klein ended up looking into Apple’s finances, and Eastman & Eastman kept an eye on the legalities.) Peter Asher recalled: “Paul reacted very negatively to Klein’s arrival. I remember him walking around the building looking scary in his black turtle-neck pullover.”

The first thing that Klein set his sights on was the buy-out of NEMS (now called Nemperor). This was the deal that set the whole train in motion. A buy-out made sense, because, thanks to Brian’s sneaky deal in ’67, Nemperor were still creaming off 25% of The Beatles royalties, even though they’d long since given up managing the group.
