The Beatles flew to Amsterdam and had a tour of the red-light district. Many years later John recalled: “We hit town, and I’m not pissing about either. There’s photographs of me grovelling about, crawling about in Amsterdam on my knees, coming out of whore houses and things like that, and people were saying, ‘Good morning, John…’ The police escorted me to the places because they didn’t want a big scandal.” The next day they had a much more gentle tour of the canals in an open-topped boat, and the kids were jumping in the river to get their autographs! 15,000 police had to guard the banks from 50,000 kids.
