The Beatles released their first UK single: ‘Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You’. Brian was supposed to have bought up 10,000 copies for his chain of record shops – because that’s how many you needed to get in the Top 20. He let EMI’s own publishing house, Ardmore & Beechwood, promote it, but he was so annoyed at how little they did to plug it, that he took his business elsewhere for the next release.

George’s mum remembered them playing it on the radio: “George told us that it ‘might’ be on Radio Luxembourg. So we stayed up until two in the morning, glued to the set, and nothing happened. So Harold went to bed, as he had to be up at five for his shift on the buses. And in the end, I went up to bed as well. And I was just going in the bedroom, when George came rushing up the stairs …
