Because Brian had cleared a few months out of their busy schedule to make a now-binned movie, The Beatles suddenly found that they were blessed with nearly four months of free-time. So, to fill up the days, John accepted a small part in Dick Lester’s new movie, How I Won The War, and flew to Hanover to start filming. This initially led to speculation that he was leaving the group, but he explained: “There were many reasons for doing it: 1) it was Dick Lester; 2) it was anti-war; and 3) I didn’t know what else to do now that The Beatles had stopped touring… What do you do when you don’t tour? There’s no life. Because I’d been on the road for… well, what the hell do you do all day, you know, I mean? [‘Laughs’] So I went and did the movie which was boring as hell and spent six weeks …
