The Beatles’ EMI audition. Norman Smith remembered seeing his worksheet pinned up on the canteen wall: “It said ’7pm: The Beatles’. I thought, ‘Some typist has buggered up again’… They all looked so thin and weedy! Almost under-nourished. We’d seen a few long-haired groups in our time, but nothing like The Beatles. It was almost a double-take job.” Ken Townsend recalled: “They dressed a bit differently and had what we thought was very long hair, though looking back now at the old photographs it’s very hard to believe. And they had broad Liverpool accents – and we didn’t have many people from Liverpool recording at Abbey Road.” (…A fact that’s born out by reading the docket in the archives. When it came to signing in at the end of the day, the cashier didn’t have a fucking clue …
