Buoyed by the success of the ‘Hey Jude’ promo, Paul championed the idea of returning to the stage, but he had to badger the others into it: “They were very happy not to work, because they were enjoying the rewards of their success… I was like, ‘Hey guys! C’mon! We can’t sit around, we gotta do something. We’re The Beatles!’” But none of them were up to it – George especially, who refused point-blank to go back on tour. As a compromise Paul suggested that they do a one-off, single venue gig sometime around Christmas.
