Saturday, 1st April

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 1 (19:00–06:00) during which they recorded Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise).

Sunday, 2nd April

After the final session for ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ they went round Mama Cass’s house (of The Mamas and Papas), and stuck a couple of radios on the ledge and played it full-blast out the window. Derek Taylor remembered: “All of the windows opened and people leaned out, wondering. It was obvious who it was on the record. Nobody complained. A lovely spring morning. People were smiling and giving us the thumbs up.”

Monday, 3rd April

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 1 (19:30–22:30) during which they recorded Within You Without You.

Paul flew to America to pay Jane a surprise visit on her 21st birthday. She was touring round the States with the Bristol Vic in ‘Romeo And Juliet’.

Sunday, 9th April

Paul was invited to join the Monterey Pop Festival’s advisory board. His first recommendation was to book Jimi Hendrix.

Monday, 10th April

Paul attended a Beach Boys session, leading to rumours that he sang backing on the song ‘Vegetables’.

Tuesday, 11th April

Paul flew back to London, working out the concept for ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ on the way.

Wednesday, 19th April

The Beatles’ lawyer warned them that if they didn’t invest £2 million quick, then it would go straight to the taxman. So he advised them to start up a brand new company with their earnings.

Thursday, 20th April

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 2 (19:00–02:15) during which they recorded Only A Northern Song.

Tuesday, 25th April

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 3 (19:00–03:45) during which they recorded Magical Mystery Tour.

The first session for what was to become the ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ EP.

Wednesday, 26th April

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 3 (19:00–02:00) during which they recorded Magical Mystery Tour.

Thursday, 27th April

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 3 (19:00–00:45) during which they recorded Magical Mystery Tour.

Saturday, 29th April

Recording session for the TV show ‘Man Alive’ at the Alexandra Palace. This show was broadcast on 17th May (BBC2) and featured an interview with John Lennon.

Sunday, 30th April

John flew to the tiny island of Dornish, which he bought for himself back in March.
