Recording session at EMI Studios No. 2 (14:30–21:45) during which they recorded The End, I Want You (She’s So Heavy) and Oh! Darling.

The Abbey Road photoshoot. The photo was taken by Iain Macmillan at ten in the morning. He had to stand up a step-ladder in the middle of the street while the police held up the traffic. He shot numerous poses, some walking away from the studio, and some towards it (the final shot shows them walking towards it). In a couple of them Paul wore his sandals, but in the one on the cover he's bare-foot.

Saturday, 9th August

The Manson family murders. Terminal nut-case, and absolute fucking fruit-cake, Charles Manson, went on a two-day killing spree which culminated in the murder of Sharon Tate and her mates. The police initially suspected the Beatles of committing the crimes, because the blood-stained walls cited lines from their lyrics.

Linda gave birth to Paul’s first daughter, and called her Mary (after Paul’s mother). With Heather bounding round the house as well, Paul had little time for business and stayed away from Apple. (That was his excuse, anyway.)

Friday, 29th August

Klein shut down Apple Electronics, calling it “a waste of money.”
