The Beatles’ diary -- February 1960

February 1960

Sometime early in the year (date unknown) Stuart renamed the group ‘The Beetles’, in honour of Buddy Holly’s backing-band ‘The Crickets’. The spelling was to change every couple of months, until John finally settled on ‘Beatles’ in mid-August.

George later suggested that he nicked the name from the Marlon Brando movie ‘The Wild One’, in which Lee Marvin had a rival gang called ‘The Beetles’. But seeing as the film was banned in Britain until 1967 that is considered highly unlikely. is not affiliated with or approved by The Beatles, Apple, MPL, EMI or Capitol Records.
