The Beatles’ diary -- February 1960

February 1960

Sometime early in the year (date unknown) Stuart renamed the group ‘The Beetles’, in honour of Buddy Holly’s backing-band ‘The Crickets’. The spelling was to change every couple of months, until John finally settled on ‘Beatles’ in mid-August.

George later suggested that he nicked the name from the Marlon Brando movie ‘The Wild One’, in which Lee Marvin had a rival gang called ‘The Beetles’. But seeing as the film was banned in Britain until 1967 that is considered highly unlikely.
