The Beatles’ diary -- July 1969

July 1969

Tuesday, 1st July

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 2 (14:30–22:00) during which they recorded You Never Give Me Your Money.

First session for ‘Abbey Road’. George Martin recalled: “I thought that after ‘Get Back’ I’d never work with them again. So I was quite surprised when Paul rang me up and said, ‘We’re going to make another record, would you like to produce it?’

Wednesday, 2nd July

Recording session at EMI Studios No. 2 (15:00–21:00) during which they recorded Her Majesty, Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight.

Cynthia travelled up to Scotland to give John an ear-bashing, and took Julian straight back home again. This was also the day that Brian Jones (of The Rolling Stones) was found drowned in a swimming pool, aged 27. He’d only announced his departure from the band a month before, so wild rumours started flying around about him being bumped off. John said: “From being brilliant he became the kind of person you dread ringing you up. He was in a lot of pain but I was going through so much myself that it seemed there was nothing I could do to help.”

Thursday, 3rd July

John’s first solo single ‘Give Peace A Chance’ was released in the UK. It was credited to ‘Lennon/McCartney and the Plastic Ono Band’, but Paul had nothing to do with it. The Plastic Ono Band wasn’t ‘actually’ a band at all, because it had no permanent members.

John was discharged from hospital after his car-crash in Golspie.

Wednesday, 9th July

John’s first session after his car crash. Yoko was quite badly hurt and she still couldn’t get out of bed, so John had Harrod’s wheel a new one into the studio (and he was ribbed mercilessly for weeks!). He even strapped a microphone above her head in case she wanted to say something. A visiting dignitary said: “I was at Abbey Road and there was Yoko lying on the bed in the studio and walking around in a see-through nightdress. That stuck in my mind. I thought, now that’s a bit unusual. But that was how it had to be.”
