The Beatles’ diary -- May 1960

May 1960

Sometime during May one of their rehearsal sessions was captured on reel-to-reel tape, including early versions of One After 909, When I’m Sixty-Four, I’ll Follow The Sun and Hallelujah, I Love Her So.

It was also during the month of May that Ringo went to Butlins with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes and changed his name to Ringo. Up until now he had always been known as ‘Rings’ Starkey (as opposed to Richard Starkey – his real name), but Rory made him change his name to Starr so he could announce his solo spot as ‘Star Time’. And ‘Rings Starr’ didn’t exactly roll off his tongue so his name went out the window. Showbiz rules. Their 13-week stint proved so successful that they were offered a short tour of American air-bases.

Tuesday, 3rd May

This was the gig that Gene Vincent did with Gerry and the Pacemakers in support, promoted by Larry Parnes and Allan Williams. The Beatals (as they were now known) had to content themselves with sitting in the stalls. One day later John went and begged Williams for a job.

Thursday, 5th May

Allan Williams became The Beatals first manager. He actually acted more like a promoter than a bona fide manager, getting them a pile of gigs around Liverpool and a run at his Jacaranda Club, but his first impression left a lot to be desired.
