George Martin described this troubled LP in his autobiography ‘All You Need Is Ears’… “Bhaskar Menon had become the president of Capitol Records in America,” he recalled. “And in 1976 he phoned me to say that he was proposing to issue an album called ‘Rock And Roll Music’, using some of the early Beatles numbers. He asked me if I could approve the tapes before they went out, since they couldn’t get hold of any of The Beatles. So I went along to listen and was appalled!”

The problem stemmed from the fact that back in 1963, all of the songs were done on two-track tape with the rhythm on one side and the vocals on the other.
