This special edition picture disc came about because of the Bee Gees’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ rock-opera movie. Whilst the movie itself was a forgetable flop, it did manage to re-ignite some interest in The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ LP.

  • Label: Capitol MFSL 1 100
  • Released: October 1982

In the late 1970s Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) made a name for themselves by cutting classic albums at half-speed. This new mastering technology produced high quality lacquers that captured every little nuance of sound and improved stereo separation.

The first three Beatles’ album to receive the MFSL treatment were ‘Abbey Road’, ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ and ‘The White Album’. The remaining nine albums were all released simultaneously in the ‘The Beatles/The Collection’ box-set.

Not content with their high quality remastering of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, MFSL treated the Beatles’ best LP to an extra special Ultra High Quality Recording (UHQR).

This was sold in a limited edition series of just 5,000 copies, and despite being more five times the cost of a normal LP was still an instant sell-out.
