Capitol originally considered this for an LP as early as in 1964. They spruced up a tape of the concert on the 23rd August and gave it to The Beatles for a listen. They wisely baulked at their performance and the poor sound quality, and consigned it to the archives. Capitol then turned their attention to ‘The Beatles’ Story’ instead.

Two years later Capitol dusted off the tapes for another go, but The Beatles blocked it once more. It wasn’t until they knocked up a new set in 1977 that The Beatles mellowed on the LP. This time around they included performances from their 1965 gig as well, and George Martin managed to clean up the tapes.
