The ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ movie turned into a bit of a nightmare for Capitol, because when the contract was drawn up in 1963 they still weren’t interested in The Beatles’ product. Vee-Jay had recently seen their first two singles flop out of sight and the idea of wasting a load more American dollars on some lousy British band made the Capitol big-wigs laugh out loud. So Brian signed the rights over to the film’s distributors instead – United Artists. By the time the movie came out in ’64, however, the picture had changed dramatically. The Beatles were now the hottest property in showbiz, and United Artists had the rights to the soundtrack!
