By February ’67 Capitol were getting so desperate for another song that they asked Brian to pull some tracks from the ‘Pepper’ sessions. EMI had decided to release a greatest hits package to plug the gap, but for some unknown reason Capitol abstained.

George Martin eventually relented and came up with this. “Knowing how desperate Brian was feeling I decided to give him a super strong combination,” he said. “A double-punch that could not possibly fail: ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’. These songs would, I told him, make a fantastic double A-sided disc.” Unfortunately Martin’s plan backfired somewhat when it was kept off the top spot in Britain by Engelbert Humperdinck.
