5-star review  from  Dominic

Well you certainly can’t knock the contents although I suppose at the time (Dec 1966) Beatle fans would have been a little disapointed not to have their customary long player of new material in their Christmas stocking.

Having knocked touring on the head after a difficult final trip to the Philapinnes & the USA the Boys decided to concentrate on studio work and after a well deserved break began working on the songs that would go towards the Sgt. Pepper masterpiece. EMI with nothing new to flog to the lucrative seasonal market, but easily with enough materal to compile a Beatles Best of decided to knock up this compilation. And although the cover may look like it was designed in a bit of a hurry they we’re certainly spoilt for choice on songs to include; so much so that the first two singles Love Me Do and Please Please Me don’t get a look in.

Early memos at EMI originally list "This Boy" as one of the tracks and its inclusion wouldn’t have been out of place here but this was an error as the previously unreleased to the UK Larry Williams cover "Bad Boy" was in fact the 16th track; and gave the Beatles die hards something brand new to listen to as well as including on LP for the first time many of the Fabs best known hits such as From Me To You, She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand.

All in all a pretty impressive package. Even though its since been superceeded by the Red Album and the infamous "1", both highly successful, it’s a shame that this splendid collection has never made it onto CD.
